Description: I have always loved the compressed look of custom bikes, their wonderful paint and convoluted chrome reflections when the bikes are parked so close to each other. They are like raw materials waiting to be abstracted into color, shape and form. Scott Jacobs and I discussed this image before he painted it as "Fork it Over." We talked about the qualities of the image that make it uniquely photographic and different from traditional painting, particularly the highly selective focus. He felt this would be the most challenging part of interpreting the photograph into paint. He did a fabulous job. The painting and the photograph considered together, make me think of how photography has affected painting and painting has affected photography for more than one hundred and fifty years.
